Why is body composition important?
Put more simply, body composition refers to the proportion of body fat and lean muscle mass in the body. It's a crucial aspect of overall health and well-being for several reasons:
Your scale is not your friend:
· Understanding body composition allows for more precise weight management. It helps differentiate between weight loss due to fat reduction and potential muscle loss. This distinction is important for achieving fitness and performance goals. For example, the number on the scale may be staying the same but your lean muscle mass percentage is increasing while your body fat percentage is decreasing. This means that you are on the right track! Contrarily, the number on the scale may be decreasing but your lean muscle mass is decreasing while your body fat mass is remaining high. This is often referred to as being “skinny fat” and can lead to a myriad of health problems down the line.
Burn Baby Burn:
· Body composition influences metabolic rate and metabolic health. Lean muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue, meaning it burns more calories at rest. A higher proportion of lean mass can support a healthy metabolism.
Stay Healthy:
· Body composition provides valuable information about an individual's risk for various health conditions. Studies have shown that excessive fat mass, especially around the abdomen (visceral fat), is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders.
